Back in 2003, when dancehall was leaning hard into raw, stripped-down drum programming and quick-hit hooks, Oriental Riddim kept the focus tight with just two cuts and no wasted motion. The pattern is lean and slightly exotic in feel, with the groove carrying more weight than the vocal performances, so Shammi Salickram’s Indian Body and Ziggy Rankin’s I Shall Return both ride the same pulse without crowding it. That economy suits the project: there’s no filler, just a sharp little dancehall framework that leaves room for the rhythm to breathe. By the time I Shall Return closes it out, the riddim has already made its point.
