Nominee Riddim – Konsequence Muzik

Konsequence Muzik keeps Nominee Riddim in that sweet spot where modern dancehall still feels rooted in juggling culture. The Canadian-based, Jamaican-linked label has been putting out varied compilations since the early 2010s, and by 2020 it was already deep into a catalogue that had run through projects like Kurfew, True Colours and Life To Live. Nominee lands as another slice of that approach, with Tristmar Peart’s production stamp carrying the whole thing.

The rhythm has a clean, mid-tempo bounce with enough space for melody, but it still leaves room for dancehall talk and attitude. Gyptian’s Missing You gives the riddim its softest edge, riding the groove with his familiar smooth, emotive phrasing and a lover’s-rock tilt that softens the bashment pressure. Maestro Don’s Bad Gal goes the other way, sharper and more direct, with the kind of streetwise flirtation that sits comfortably in his growing run of Konsequence cuts. Starface and General B’s No Long Talking adds the most obvious clash energy, pairing her bold, cheeky delivery with General B’s veteran command and giving the riddim a more confrontational, party-ready pull.

That mix is what makes Nominee work: it is not overloaded, and it does not need to be. The instrumental leaves the hooky bassline and bounce exposed enough that each voice can steer the mood in a different direction. For a 2020 dancehall juggling, it feels like a label project that knows exactly what kind of space it wants to occupy.
