Mud Up Riddim, first used in 1987, is one of those classic dancehall foundations that kept getting re-cut well beyond its original run, with later takes including the better-known Workie Workie version and tunes like Super Cat’s original Mud Up, Beenie Man, Apache Scratchie’s Gold Pon Teeth and Pan Rack, and Angie Angel’s cuts. The rhythm is credited to Kenneth Black, while the post also points to a wide circle of producers and labels tied to the project, including King Jammy, Bobby Digital, Donovan Germain, Bunny Lee, Witty, and Tony Kelly. That broad production trail helps explain why the riddim has so many different shades across the late ’80s and early ’90s, moving comfortably between deejay cuts and sung selections.
