MOSQUITO RIDDIM produced by BARRY U 1996
Mosquito Overview
When the Mosquito Riddim sound system cut came together in the studio in 1996, it brought a new kind of energy to dancehall. The team worked late into the night, layering sharp drum patterns and catchy bass lines. The riddim creator wanted something bold and different, and the direction was clear—make the rhythms hit hard and keep the dancefloor moving. Producer BARRY U guided the project with a strong vision. Known for his work with the label Barry U Productions, he had already made a name in the dancehall scene by the mid-90s. His productions were known for their punchy sound and club appeal, and Mosquito Riddim became one of his most recognized works. The artists on this riddim each brought their own style. Anna T delivered “I'm Gonna Wait,” giving a fresh voice to the mix. Daddy Screw, with “Five Grand A Day,” added his signature flow. Daddy Screw is well known for his hit “Big Things A Gwaan,” which helped him stand out in the 90s. Delly Ranks performed “Boy Weh Every Big Woman Like.” Delly Ranks would later gain more fame with songs like “Pon Di Corner” in the 2000s. Determine’s “Ten Giant Jump” gave the riddim even more energy. Fathead, a respected deejay from the early dancehall era, returned with “Gal Dem.” Fans of 1996 always talk about this sound system cut. It gave new artists a chance to shine and remains a favorite for many dancehall lovers.
