Metric Overview
In 1997, dancehall music was full of energy and excitement. That year, a bashment rhythm called Metric Riddim became popular in Jamaica’s dancehall scene. Sound systems played this riddim at parties and dances, and selectors loved its strong, club-ready beat. Several artists recorded songs on the Metric Riddim. Action delivered “Hotty Hotty,” a lively track that fit well with the dancehall style of the time. Black Pearl’s song “Ingrid” brought her unique voice to the riddim. Boby Crystal, known for his smooth singing, added “Find Me A Girl.” Brother Jimmy contributed with “Buffalo,” giving the riddim another strong vocal performance. Elephant Man and Harry Toddler teamed up for “A Follow Wi.” Elephant Man is one of dancehall’s most famous artists, later known for hits like “Pon De River Pon De Bank.” Harry Toddler also became well known as a member of the Scare Dem Crew. Their collaboration on this riddim added extra energy. Other artists on the riddim included General B with “Mix Up,” Glamma Kid with “Moschino,” High Plains Drifte with “Greates How,” and Mad Cobra with both “Mac Arena” and “Plant It.” Mad Cobra is known for his international hit “Flex.” Today, selectors still rate the Metric Riddim highly. Its songs and artists capture the true spirit of 1997 dancehall.
