Rashanco’s Meditation Riddim leans more toward moody, roots-conscious reggae than the harder dancehall energy you might expect from some of the label’s other mid-2000s work, and that’s what gives it its pull. Anthony B opens things up with “Higher Level, ” a tune that fits the meditative title without getting soft, while Lutan Fyah’s “Livety First” pushes the conscious side even further with his usual straight-ahead delivery. The pairings help too: Half Pint and Michigan on “I Know It” add a veteran-meets-younger-generation feel, and Natural Black with Stream keep the vibe steady on “Got A Story. ” With eight cuts in all, including a clean version, this 2004 set sits right in that period when conscious one-riddim projects were still carrying a lot of weight in reggae circles.
