MARIO BROS RIDDIM produced by DON CORLEON RECORDS 1998
Mario Bros Overview
In 1998, dancehall fans in Jamaica and beyond heard a new sound from the Mario Bros Riddim. This yard session tape quickly became a favorite among selectors and sound systems. The selector’s choice for this tape was strong, making it stand out from other session tapes of the late 1990s. Many tapes from that era had hits, but this one brought together a powerful mix of energy and style. The tape featured three well-known dancehall artists. Cobra performed “Chat Nuh Fool,” a track that matched his tough lyrical style. Cobra was already famous for his hit “Flex,” which was a chart success in Jamaica and the UK. Elephant Man added his voice with “No Hail Me.” Elephant Man is known for his lively stage shows and later won the 2004 International Reggae and World Music Award for DJ of the Year. Vybz Kartel, who would soon become one of dancehall’s biggest stars, delivered “Bwoy Head Fell.” This song showed his early lyrical skills and strong delivery. The producer behind the project was DON CORLEON RECORDS. Don Corleon, whose real name is Donovan Bennett, is known for producing many successful riddims and helping launch the careers of several dancehall and reggae stars, including Vybz Kartel and Sean Paul. His work on this riddim gave it a street anthem feel and helped unify the sound. Fans from 1998 still remember this selector’s choice as a true dancehall anthem.
