Somewhere in the 2010 soca season, Maniac Riddim feels like one of those cuts that would’ve been moving through fetes with a quick, cheeky pulse rather than trying to muscle its way into the room. The six-song run keeps the spotlight on a small cluster of voices, with Impulse’s “What’s My Name” and Sharla alongside Major Ranks on “Hot Like” doing the most to give the rhythm its shape, while Silver, Snakey and Ziggy Ranking keep the energy flickering around the edges. There’s a version cut in the middle too, which gives the whole thing that proper riddim tape feel, and the production name staying simply “Various Artists” only adds to the slightly loose, backyard-party charm. Short, sharp, and very much of its moment.
