Mad Up Riddim (2016) – Madhouse Records

Dave Kelly’s Madhouse Records is back in familiar territory here, and that matters because this is the same imprint that helped shape dancehall’s 1990s era with a run of instantly recognizable riddims. Mad Up lands as a crisp, mid-tempo juggling with a clipped, stuttering groove and a lean, digital bounce that leaves plenty of room for the vocals to jab through. It feels less like a wall-of-sound anthem and more like a sly, speaker-friendly cut built for DJs to run back and forth.

The lineup is tightly selected: Cham turns in “Yeah (Mad Up)” and “Jump Off, ” both delivered with the smooth, cocky ease that made him one of Madhouse’s most reliable voices. Vanessa Bling’s “Stay Ina Yuh Lane” brings a sharper female counterpoint, with a warning-shot tone that sits neatly in the rhythm’s pocket. Tanto Blacks, who later recorded as Real Rich, comes through on “Real Rich (Mad Up)” and “Mi Nuh Likey (Jump Off), ” giving the riddim a more street-level edge. Di Rebel’s “Money Mi Want” keeps the money talk front and center, matching the track’s sparseness with direct, no-frills phrasing.

What makes Mad Up work is the way it balances nostalgia and freshness. It nods to the classic Madhouse formula — economical production, memorable drum programming, and hooks built for the dance — without feeling like a museum piece. The strongest cuts are the ones that play off the riddim’s tight bounce rather than fight it, especially Cham’s slick opener and Vanessa Bling’s sharply delivered warning.
