LOVE PUNAANY BAD – JOHN JOHN RECORDS 1993
Love Punaany Bad – John John Records Overview
In 1993, reggae was full of strong roots sounds, and the dub cut from John John Records was a perfect example. The riddim brought together some of the top artists of the time, each adding their own style. Bounty Killer, known for his song "Long Donkey Cod," was already making his mark as a powerful deejay. Junior Cat, with his track "Iron Gloves," showed his unique voice and energy. Major Mackerel, famous for "Cow Cod," added his special vocal style to the mix. The dub version on this release stands out from other recordings of the era. While many 1993 reggae tracks started to blend digital sounds, this dub kept a rootsy, heavy bass and echo style. It was more stripped back and let the instruments and rhythm shine, just like classic roots reggae from earlier years. Terror Fabulous, who had a big hit with "Jump & Gwaan Bad," and Terry Ganzie, known for "Nuff Reward," were also part of the scene at this time. Their songs showed the range of talent coming out in 1993. The producer, John John, is the son of the legendary King Jammy and was known for his skill in bringing artists together on strong riddims. This dub cut helped keep the roots tradition alive, even as reggae was changing. For reggae fans, it is a classic example of 1993 roots music done right.
