Lion Inna Den Riddim – Iron Gate Records

Iron Gate Records came through with a roots-heavy 2014 riddim that leans on militant drums, warm bass and a clear nod to classic dancehall phrasing, then folds in a sharp sample from Sly and Robbie’s “Baltimore” to give the whole thing extra bite. The lineup moves nicely between singers and singjays: Sizzla’s “Jah Jah Solve Dem” and Lutan Fyah’s “Hard To Stay Alive” bring the fire, Exco Levi’s “Herb Man” keeps the conscious side front and center, and Jahdan Blakkamoore’s “Cool Like The Breeze” adds a smoother touch before the instrumental closes it out. There’s also good pressure from Fyakin, Teflon and Dexta Malawi, which helps the riddim feel less like a one-off and more like part of that early-2010s push for heavier, sound-system-minded reggae with a modern edge.
