Kick Up Riddim – Mixing Lab 1998
Kick Up Overview
In 1998, the Kick Up Riddim landed at a time when dancehall was bursting with energy and new sounds. The riddim quickly became a favorite in Jamaica’s bashment scene, known for its lively parties and street dances. Its modern, upbeat style fit perfectly with the late 90s wave of dancehall music, drawing crowds to the dancefloor. Kick Up Riddim was crafted by a beat maker with a sharp ear for catchy hooks and deep bass. The production’s crisp, rhythmic feel helped set a new standard for dancehall riddims at the time. The beat’s playful yet hard-hitting edge became a backdrop for both rising and established artists to shine. Don T made his mark with “Everyting Special,” a track that showcased his smooth delivery and fresh approach. Fargo Voice added a different vibe with “A Little Time,” bringing a melodic touch that stood out among the tracks. General B, known for his work with the Monster Shack Crew, joined forces with Delly Ranks for “Fraud.” Delly Ranks would later become well known for hits like “Pon Di Corner” with T.O.K., but here, he and General B brought sharp lyrics and real dancehall flavor. Lt Stitchie and Donavon Steele teamed up for “Kick Up,” giving the riddim even more energy. Lt Stitchie, a veteran in dancehall, was already respected for his fast-paced delivery and hits like “Natty Dread.” Powerman contributed two songs, “Girlz Time” and “New Tune,” both filled with his signature style and humor.
