Kan Kan Riddim – Advokit Productions

Out of Trinidad and Tobago’s Carnival-season soca push in late 2014, AdvoKit Productions lined up Kan Kan Riddim as a compact seven-song set with the instrumental tucked in behind the vocals. The project dates to November 25, 2014, and its mood leans into the producer’s own description of a groove inspired by the “Kan Kan” area in Guinea, with guitar flashes and an African-tinged melodic pull that give the rhythm a different contour from the usual road-march churn. Benjai and H2O Phlo’s “Phenomenal, ” Olatunji’s “Ola, ” and Sekon Sta’s “The Best” are the names that keep coming up, with King Bubba and Lead Pipe adding a sharper party edge on “Don’t Bother We. ” The tracklist closes on AdvoKit Productions’ own instrumental version.
