Kabaka Pyramid – A Bare Klass Selection Overview
The journey of the 2016 roots reggae project, built around a conscious musical backdrop, began in small Kingston studios. The producer, who shaped the sound, brought together musicians who understood the deep roots tradition. Laying down steady drum and bass lines, they aimed for a sound that honored the past but spoke to the present. The dub engineer, known as Tippy I, played a key role. With careful mixing and echo effects, he gave the riddim its distinct, atmospheric quality. As the riddim grew, Kabaka Pyramid was one of the first to voice his songs. His tracks, like "Life Is Easy" and "No Capitalist," captured the spirit of the times with thoughtful lyrics and clear delivery. Kabaka Pyramid’s "Well Done," already a standout in his career, continued to show his skill for social commentary, following the success of his album "Kontraband," which won the 2019 Reggae Grammy. The project also welcomed strong collaborations. "Strive" by Kabaka Pyramid Feat Exco Levi brought together two powerful voices. Exco Levi, a winner of multiple Juno Awards, added his signature energy to the track. "Pon Di Wings" saw Kabaka Pyramid Feat Italo Skarcha blending styles, while Italo Skarcha - Pon Di Wings — Pon Di Wings offered another take on the riddim’s message. "Foundation" by Kabaka Pyramid Feat Jah Sun and Jah Sun - Foundation — Foundation reminded listeners of reggae’s roots. Songs like "Change This World" and "Cyaa Study Me" by Kabaka Pyramid rounded out the collection, keeping the conscious vibe strong.
