Rough-cut roots. This one runs on a tough late-’70s/early-’80s reggae step with enough room for deejays and singers to cut through, and Frankie Paul’s “Worries In The Dance” gives the riddim its best-known hook. The line-up is strong without feeling crowded: Dennis Brown’s “Coming Home Tonight” brings the sweet, heavyweight vocal edge, Don Carlos turns in the plainspoken bite of “I’m Not Crazy, ” and Early B, Nicodemus, Ranking Joe, and Sister Nancy keep the version side lively in proper dancehall fashion. You also get a nice stretch of classic voices in Leroy Smart, Michael Palmer, Toyan, and Yellowman, which places the rhythm right in that moment when roots vocals and rising sound-system energy were moving side by side in Jamaica.
