Herb Field Riddim – Ikno Sound Records

Candiman’s “Herb Field” opens this 2013 Ikno Sound Records set with the sort of toasted, herb-conscious energy that gives the whole riddim its identity, and from there the project moves easily between Jamaica and Italy in a way that feels unusually organic. Nature’s “Ganga Valley” and Nerone’s “Free Up My Meditation” sit right in that sweet spot where the groove stays loose but the message stays firmly rooted, while the duo cuts with Boost and Momak, Quilo Your Kommandanti and Randagiu Sardu, and Saime and Ciaka add a more local, dialect-heavy flavor to the mix. Ikno Sound keeps the production lean and earthy, letting the bass do the talking without crowding the vocals, which suits this seven-track spread nicely. A small, easy-to-miss detail: it was finished with ten artists in all, and you can hear that wide-circle feel in every cut.
