HARDWARE & LUMBER RIDDIM produced by PENTHOUSE RECORDS 1991
Hardware And Lumber Overview
The Hardware And Lumber Riddim compilation came out in Jamaica in 1991. It was released by Penthouse Records, one of the country’s most respected dancehall labels. Penthouse, founded by Donovan Germain, is known for launching many of the biggest reggae and dancehall stars and for its crisp, modern sound in the early 1990s. The riddim was a favorite in street dances that year, with its bouncing bass and sharp drum patterns. Four standout artists brought their own energy to the project. Buju Banton, who would later become a Grammy winner, delivered “Have To Get You Tonight.” Buju was just starting out then but was already known for his rough, deep voice. Mad Cobra, who scored a major hit with “Flex” a few years later, came strong with “Ram It.” Terror Fabulous added his unique singjay style to “Satisfaction.” He would later find international fame with the hit “Action” in 1993. Terry Ganzie, known for his rootsy delivery, performed “Hardware & Lumber,” giving the riddim its name. Penthouse Records made sure each artist’s voice and style shone through. The compilation’s sound was perfect for both radio and the big speakers of sound systems. Hardware And Lumber Riddim remains a snapshot of dancehall’s golden era.
