GREENSLEEVES SAMPLER – GREENSLEEVES RECORDS 1986
Greensleeves Sampler – Greensleeves Records Overview
This roots reggae project first appeared in the early 1980s, released by Greensleeves Records in the UK. Since then, its influence has continued, and it is still played at modern roots events and sound system gatherings. Several top reggae artists contributed to this project. Augustus Pablo is known for his unique melodica sound, and his track "Pipers Of Zion" shows his deep roots style. Pablo was a key figure in dub reggae and produced the classic album "King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown." Black Uhuru, performing "I Love King Selassie," are one of Jamaica’s most famous reggae groups. They won the first-ever Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album in 1985 for "Anthem." Their song here brings a powerful message and strong rhythms. Burning Spear delivers "We Are Going," adding his signature conscious lyrics and vocal style. Spear is well known for his album "Marcus Garvey," which helped define roots reggae in the 1970s. Carlene Davis sings "Winnie Mandela," a tribute to the South African activist. Davis is respected for her gospel and reggae releases, and her music often carries messages of hope and resilience. Dennis Brown’s "Crazy List" brings a soulful touch. Known as the "Crown Prince of Reggae," Brown had many hits like "Money In My Pocket" and influenced many younger artists. The project’s roots riddim, shaped by expert production, continues to inspire new generations in reggae music.
