GATES OF MOUNT ZION RIDDIM 2001
Gates Of Mount Zion Overview
The Gates Of Mount Zion Riddim first appeared in 2001, coming out of Jamaica’s rich roots reggae scene. This roots drop quickly found its way into reggae playlists, thanks to its deep, soulful sound and strong cultural message. Several respected artists recorded on this riddim. Sugar Minott Louie Culture brought their voices together on “No Vacancy,” a track that stands out for its conscious lyrics. Sugar Minott, famous for his classic hit “Good Thing Going,” was known for his smooth singing and roots style. Louie Culture added his own energy, making the song memorable. Cocoa Tea’s “Cycle” is another highlight. Cocoa Tea is well-known for songs like “Rikers Island” and for his smooth, melodic voice. He has performed on many international stages and remains a favorite among roots reggae fans. Morgan Heritage delivered “Jealousy” on the riddim. This group, sometimes called “The Royal Family of Reggae,” won a Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album in 2016 with “Strictly Roots.” Their harmonies and conscious lyrics shine on this track as well. Glen Washington’s “In The Right Direction” and Sister Carol’s “Feedy Feedy” add more variety. Glen Washington is recognized for his strong voice and positive songs, while Sister Carol is a respected deejay and singer known for her powerful presence in reggae since the 1980s. The dub engineer behind the riddim gave each track a warm, full sound that fits the roots tradition.
