GANGSTER CITY RIDDIM – ADIDJAHIEM RECORDS / NOTNICE RECORDS 2010
Gangster City Overview
In 2010, the Gangster City Riddim became a favorite at yard sessions and dancehall parties. DJs loved the way this sound system cut mixed dancehall with drill-inspired melodies. The beat carried a strong, streetwise energy, but also had catchy hooks that made people want to dance. Each artist on the riddim brought their own style. Merital Family performed "Pray," giving a melodic and heartfelt touch. Popcaan’s "Gangster City" was a standout, showing why he later became one of dancehall’s biggest stars. Popcaan would go on to release his debut album, "Where We Come From," in 2014, which reached the Billboard Reggae Albums chart. Shawn Storm’s "My Life" added a deep, personal feel, while Tommy Lee’s "Holding Out The Pressure" had a darker, edgy sound. Vybz Kartel, already a dancehall icon, gave thanks with "Thank You Jah." Kartel is known for his influential career and for hits like "Clarks" and the album "King of the Dancehall." Mixing board king NotNice was behind the riddim’s production. NotNice is a respected producer who has worked with many top dancehall acts and helped shape the sound of the 2010s. The Gangster City Riddim’s blend of genres and strong artist line-up made it a lasting favorite at bashment events, bringing together fans of both new and classic dancehall.
