Fry Yiy Riddim – Uim Records

Dark and spare, the Fry Yiy Riddim came out of UIM Records in 2012 with just three cuts, letting each voice land without any filler around it. Popcaan’s title track is the obvious centrepiece, carrying the kind of snarly, road-ready energy that had his name ringing everywhere that year, while Dokes’ “One Gun” and Kris Garrison’s “Blood Loss” keep the tone hard and unvarnished. The release is arranged like a tight little showcase rather than a sprawling juggling, and the instrumental turns up too, which suits the stripped-back feel. UIM Records handled the production.
