    Friday Riddim - Penthouse Records

Penthouse Records pulled Friday Riddim in 2017 as a seven-cut reggae juggling with a clean, mid-tempo pulse and a polished live-band feel that sits close to roots reggae but still has the sheen of modern studio work. The rhythm has enough forward motion for the singers to stretch out, yet it stays unhurried, with the kind of warm bassline and crisp drum work that lets the melodies breathe.

Donovan Germain’s Penthouse has spent decades as one of Kingston’s most dependable homes for roots and dancehall, and this release lands squarely in that lineage. The label has long balanced heavyweight veterans with newer voices, and Friday follows that pattern without sounding forced. It was released in 2017, with VPAL handling distribution.

The cuts that give the riddim its shape are the ones that pair strong hooks with plainspoken uplift. Romain Virgo and RC on “Abused” bring a rich, emotional read to the riddim, with Virgo’s smooth tenor carrying the pain. Shuga and Gentleman’s “Let Me Ease Your Pain” pushes the harmony angle harder, while Exco Levi’s “Natty Affi Long” adds a conscious roots sermon. Dalton Harris on “Perilous Time” gives the project a darker emotional edge, and Eye Judah’s “Give Thanks” closes things on a grateful, reflective note. Slashe’s title cut, “Friday, ” ties the whole set back to the project’s name with a lighter, more celebratory touch.

It is the sort of riddim that works because every voice is given room to say something different while the production keeps the whole thing steady and cohesive.
