Back in 2008, when dancehall was leaning hard into bare-bones, hard-edged rhythms, Don Corleon’s Frequency Riddim came in with a sharp, stripped-down feel and just two cuts to carry the weight. Vybz Kartel and Don Corleon open things with “Kalico, ” and the tune has that clipped, menacing energy that fits the era’s colder street-talk style, while Mavado’s “Gun Down” pushes the same riddim into grittier territory with his usual commanding delivery. Don Corleon had already built a serious run by then, and this one keeps the focus tight rather than crowding the frame. It’s a compact set, but the instrumental itself does plenty of the talking, leaving the two vocal versions to underline how much tension the riddim can hold.
