Freedom Overview

In 2013, roots reggae had a fresh energy, and one project stood out in roots sessions everywhere. The “Freedom Riddim” release, produced by FREEDOM TRAIL, brought a strong roots sound that people kept coming back to. FREEDOM TRAIL, known for blending live horns and percussion into reggae, made sure every track felt complete. Their work on this project helped keep roots reggae alive and relevant that year. The songs on this riddim carried real messages. Turbulence Feat. Bonez — All Are One was a highlight, bringing together Turbulence, who is known for his hit “Notorious,” and Bonez. The song called for unity, and its positive lyrics fit the roots tradition. Bonez — All Are One — All Are One also stood out with a similar message, echoing the need for togetherness. Chabe — Money She Want gave the riddim a catchy, memorable hook, while Hit List — Sweet Sweet Jamaica celebrated Jamaican pride. Lutan Fyah — Mother Of Salvation added spiritual depth, and Lutan Fyah is respected for his conscious lyrics and albums like “Phantom War.” The dub cut of this project was special. Compared to other roots projects of 2013, the dub here was heavy on horns and drums, with deep echoes that filled dancehalls and sound systems. It was more melodic and full than some of the digital-heavy riddims of the time. FREEDOM TRAIL’s production style made sure the dub version kept the roots feeling strong, rewarding both casual listeners and roots fans. This project became a staple for selectors, showing that roots reggae and its message were still powerful in 2013.
