Death Warrant Riddim – Damage Music

Damage Music’s Death Warrant Riddim sits in the 2016 wave of hard-edged dancehall projects that lean on menace more than melody, and the eight-cut spread keeps the focus on variations of the same dark pulse. Braintear Spookie opens with “Action Killa, ” while Govana, Teejay and Tommy Lee Sparta each push the riddim in different directions, from street-talk bravado to the colder, more ominous tone of “Darkness Rise. ” The production rides a clipped drum pattern and a low, weighty bassline, with just enough space for the voices to cut through without softening the mood. Shatta Wale’s “Real Badman” and Kapella Don’s “Dem A Wicked” fit the frame neatly, but Tommy Lee Sparta’s cut feels like the one that locks in the whole project. Everything moves at a steady mid-tempo, tight and spare, with the bass doing most of the talking.
