Crapaud Riddim – Mashworks Family Studio Productions

Mashworks Family Studio Productions kept things in a straight soca frame here, but the 2018 Crapaud Riddim is less about carnival gloss than a tight, functional groove for voiced cuts. The six-track lineup leaves room for Anthony KD’s “Jook Her, ” Cold Fire’s “Certainly, ” Lavaman’s “Criminal, ” Phragile’s “No Pedophile, ” and Smallz’s “Me Alone, ” with Lavaman getting the clearest spotlight in the tracklist rotation. The instrumental leans on a clipped, marching pulse and a low, rubbery bass line that keeps the rhythm moving without crowding the singers, which is where the arrangement earns its keep. It’s a compact release, but the tempo stays brisk and the vocal takes are pushed forward cleanly against that sharp, percussive backbone.
