CHAMPION RIDDIM produced by PENTHOUSE RECORDS 1994
Champion Overview
The studio hand behind many classic dancehall tracks in the 1990s played a big part in shaping the sound of the genre. Working closely with top producers, these engineers and assistants helped create the raw, energetic feel of the music. One of the leading labels from this time was Penthouse Records. Founded by Donovan Germain in the late 1980s, Penthouse became known for its high-quality productions and helped launch the careers of many artists. The label is famous for working with big names and producing hits that reached fans worldwide. In 1994, the Champion Riddim became a key part of dancehall music. This rhythm featured several well-known artists. Beenie Man delivered "Beat Of The Ghetto," adding his signature style. Buccaneer brought energy with "Hey Girl." Buju Banton, who later won a Grammy for his album "Before the Dawn" in 2011, recorded the popular "Champion." The artist Champion was featured with "Version," giving DJs a strong instrumental to use in their sets. Spragga Benz, known for his hit "Jack It Up," performed "Moving Up The Live." Other artists on the riddim included Sweet C with "Natty Dread," Terry Ganzie with "You Alone," and Twiggy with "Too Late." During 1994, DJs often played this yard session tape at dances, making the Champion Riddim an important part of the dancehall scene that year.
