Alkaline is the name that jumps out first on Breakaway Riddim, and “Nuttin But Badmind” has the kind of sharp, spiteful edge that made early Sartout releases easy to clock. The 2012 juggling keeps the energy lean and direct, with Feecha’s “One Drink, ” Gaza Maxwell’s “Money (Ghetto Youts Want), ” and Jahvaska’s “Money Mi A Pree” all circling the same cash-and-corner tension without sounding identical. Sartout Records, the Dane and Darren Sortie operation from Westmoreland, had already been building its link with Alkaline around that period, and this project came right at the start of that run. With ten cuts and a version, Breakaway sits near the beginning of the label’s catalogue and sketches the brash, hard-nosed dancehall lane they’d keep leaning into.
