Breadfruit Riddim – Various Artists

Breadfruit Riddim lands in that bright, wine-up pocket of early-2010s soca, with four cuts that keep the energy moving without getting too busy. Heartless’ “Jab She Want” sets the tone, and Shally Bally’s “Work Dem” feels like the natural companion piece, both riding the same quick-footed groove with a little more cheek than muscle. Deva’s “Done De Place” pushes the tempo harder, while Smiley’s “Wet It” closes the circle with the sort of hook that would have done damage in a midsummer fete. Even in a slim line-up, the riddim has enough bounce and bass to make its point, and the title track idea fits the music’s playful, island-side charm. Four tunes, one neat little run.
