Black God Riddim came out in 2020 on Rastar Records, the Kingston-and-U. S. -based independent label led by Naciamaj Uhuru, and it sits comfortably in the label’s conscious reggae lane. The sound is earthy and serious, with a slow-burning roots pulse, heavy bass, and enough space in the arrangement for the vocals to carry the weight. Akae Beka’s Make It in Time has that patient, reflective edge Vaughn Benjamin was known for, while Jah Mason’s Live As One and Turbulence’s Children of Men bring the rougher, more urgent side of modern roots. Reemah’s Against It All adds a clean, determined female voice, and Miriam Simone’s Holy Almighty Jah pushes the set deeper into straight praise music.
