Compared with the cleaner, more polished 2007 jugglin that Greensleeves was pushing around the same period, Badman Place keeps its focus on the rougher, gun talk side of dancehall: sharp one-drop skank, stripped-back drums and that blunt, menacing pulse that leaves space for the deejays to spit badman lyrics. Assassin’s “Badman, ” Frisco Kid’s “Tell You Bout Badness, ” and Cobra’s “Crime” sit right in the pocket, while Bling Dawg and Mr G add some swagger without softening the edge. The set runs 14 cuts with 13 unique artists, and the lineup gets a little extra heat from Assailiant featuring Andrea on “To The Ghetto. ” It closes with the instrumental “Bad Man Riddim, ” which leaves the whole thing sounding like it was built for selectors first and foremost.
