Wizkid, born Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun, is one of the defining
voices of modern Afrobeats: a Nigerian singer, songwriter, and
record producer whose laid-back melodies and genre-blending style
helped push the sound from Lagos into the global pop mainstream.
Raised in Lagos, he began recording young and broke through in the
early 2010s with his debut album Superstar, led by the runaway
single “Holla at Your Boy.” From there, his catalog moved steadily
from local stardom to international reach, with songs that folded
Afrobeats together with R&B, dancehall, hip-hop, and pop in a
way that felt easy rather than forced.
His crossover arrived in a big way through “One Dance” with Drake
and Kyla, a Billboard Hot 100-topping hit that introduced many
listeners around the world to his voice. That breakthrough was
followed by a run of releases that deepened his reputation rather
than repeating it, including Sounds from the Other Side, Made in
Lagos, and the Made in Lagos deluxe edition, where “Essence” with
Tems became a signature record of the Afrobeats era and later drew
a remix with Justin Bieber. GRAMMY coverage has described Wizkid’s
work as central to Afrobeats’ rise abroad, and the Recording
Academy lists one win and multiple nominations across his
career.
Wizkid’s appeal has always been broader than a single hit. He tends
to favor smooth, uncluttered production, a low-key vocal delivery,
and hooks that linger without needing to shout. That style has made
him a natural collaborator, whether he is trading verses with Burna
Boy, Chris Brown, Tyla, Asake, or other artists across African pop
and beyond. He has also become a reference point for a newer
generation of Afrobeats singers who see global ambition and local
identity as part of the same conversation. By the time Morayo
arrived, Wizkid had already spent years refining a sound that is
intimate at home, expansive abroad, and still unmistakably his
own.
