Leroy May was born on 18 March 1966 in Kingston, Jamaica. He was initially known as Redman and he learnt to deejay on Barrington Hi-Fi in 1981 and he advanced via various sound systems including Rambo Mango, Small Axe, Stone Love and People’s Choice. In 1984, his “Laughing Dragon” dubplate became popular that’s when he decided to change his name to Red Dragon. Some of his earliest recordings included “Computer” produced by Charlie Chaplin in 1985, “Nah Get Nutten” and “Commander” both produced by Harry J in 1986, In 1987, he realeased “Hol’ A Fresh” produced by Winston Riley. May also went on to record for King Tubby and King Jammy and in 1989 his debut album was released, a split LP with his brother Flourgon. In that same year he started his own label, Dragon Label and he moved into production. May helped to nurture some artists like Terry Ganzie and Buju Banton. In the early 1990s he went back to recording where he joined forces with producers like Sly & Robbie, Bobby Digital, Riley and many others. May released his hit single “Compliments On Your Kiss” which was produced by Brian & Tony Gold in 1994 and it reached number two in the UK Singles Chart. May died on 31 July 2015 at the University Hospital of the West Indies after a long illness.
