Jah Mason

Jah Mason is a respected Jamaican reggae singer and deejay known for conscious lyrics, earthy roots-rock energy, and a voice that has stayed firmly connected to the culture side of reggae. Born Andre Johnson in Manchester Parish, he began recording in the early 1990s and first came through under the name Perry Mason, with his debut single “Selassie I Call We” arriving in 1991. He later adopted the name Jah Mason after embracing the Bobo Ashanti branch of Rastafari in the mid-1990s, and that spiritual turn helped shape the direction of his music. His work has long balanced meditation, social commentary, love songs, and uplift, which is part of why he has remained a steady presence in reggae well beyond changing dancehall trends. Jah Mason built his reputation with songs such as “My Princess Gone” and “Lion Look,” records that helped define his place in Jamaican roots music and introduced him to a wider international audience. He also became a familiar collaborator through guest appearances with Jah Cure and other artists in the same conscious reggae circle. In the early 2000s, he moved into album territory with releases including Keep Your Joy and Working So Hard, then continued to issue a prolific stream of projects through labels such as VP and Greensleeves. Albums like Princess Gone…The Saga Bed and Wheat and Tears confirmed his ability to carry a full record with the same sincerity and grit he brought to singles. By the time Love & Wisdom arrived in 2015, he was firmly established as an artist with a deep catalogue and a loyal following overseas, especially in Europe, where his roots style has remained in demand. That same long-running appeal has kept him active on the road and in the studio. On the site, Jah Mason continues to appear on contemporary riddims and collaborations, including releases like “Lock Down,” showing that his music still moves comfortably between classic foundation reggae and current production styles.
