Afrika Riddim – Unemployment Records

Unemployment Records’ Afrika Riddim sits neatly in that late-2018 wave of conscious reggae one-chord projects, with a compact seven-cut lineup that leans more rootsy than flashy. Horace Martin opens with “Africa Is Calling, ” and the title says plenty: this is the kind of track that keeps its eye on message first, melody second. Simple Ratigan’s “Jah Never Leave” lands in a similar lane, but with a little more lift in the vocal phrasing, while Meiwenti’s “Afrika Is Melody” closes the sequence with the strongest sense of hook and movement. Filomuzik also steps in with the instrumental version, which gives the riddim its own space to breathe. Released in December 2018, it feels like a tidy snapshot of Unemployment Records’ Italy-based roots catalog at that point, conscious, direct, and kept to a tight 21-minute run.
