Out of Jamaica’s 2008 dancehall run, 44 Play Riddim sits in that hard, mid-tempo pocket where the big names could still cut through without crowding the beat. 111 Productions lined up 11 artists across 12 cuts, and the sequencing leans into the familiar raw/edit pairings that were common on the era’s juggling releases, with Delly Ranx and Esco’s “Close Fit, ” Rholyn X’s “Over The Bar, ” and Fresh’s “Fresh Type” each getting both versions. The heavyweight pull comes from Bounty Killer’s “Send It U” and Vybz Kartel’s “Fling Some Fuck” with Jah Vinci, while Macka Diamond and Wayne Marshall keep the riddim moving on the clean-upside of the set. The same rhythm also carried an instrumental side in circulation, which helped it travel in sound-system play.
