Levels and Chillspot Recordz were deep in their Zimbabwean dancehall pocket when they cut Zimbo Flavour Riddim, a 2014 set that leans hard into the homegrown Zimdancehall sound and rolls out with a big cast of voices rather than a single star turn. Soul Jah Love’s “Ndongosimudza Musoro” is the obvious heavyweight, and the riddim also finds strong cuts in Seh Calaz’s “Munamato Wangu, ” Kinnah and Empresy Fina’s “Zvangu Zvauya, ” and the tighter duet work from Eddylino and Ras Pompy. What’s interesting is how the production keeps that raw Mbare energy without feeling cluttered; even with more than two dozen tracks attached to it, the groove stays clipped, urgent, and easy to ride. It sits neatly in the middle of the Levels/Chillspot catalogue as one of those era-defining Zimbabwean dancehall compilations where the riddim itself is the statement.
