Built on the 1973 Yim/Mas Gan cut, this Various Labels release pulls together a classic Lloyd Daley-era foundation with a strong mix of voices and versions, led by Big Joe’s Mas Gan and The Abyssinians’ Yim Mas Gan. Bongo Herman and Lloyd’s All Stars add Tribute To The President, while Family Man and The Rebel Arms’ Tribute To Y Mas Gan gives the riddim a later roots-era run. The set also reaches into later years with cuts from Sister Carol, Prince Alla, Norbert Maye, and Tesfa All Stars, which helps show how long this rhythm has travelled. Lloyd Daley’s name is central here, and his Matador work is closely tied to some of the most familiar early roots material built around the same melody and message.
