For true dancehall lovers, I am sure you can all agree with me that Martial Arts Riddim is one of the most iconic riddims of the 2000s. Released in February 2002. The riddim makes up Greensleeves Rhythm Album #22 and #23 in the Greensleeves Records’ rhythm album series. The 2002 riddim boasts having two separate mixes featuring some of, if not, the best dancehall deejays of all time. Artists like Bounty Killer, Sizzla, Capleton, Alozade and Beenie Man were all in their prime and had double to three takes on the riddim.
This period in time coincides with the days where the beef/rivalry between Bounty and Beenie was at its peak and it was showcased in their tracks. When you also look at the line up, it features a lot of the old guard from the 90s. These include the aforementioned and other stars like Elephant Man, Shabba Ranks, Mr Lexx, and Anthony B. Vybz Kartel, Bling Dawg and Mr Vegas stood out because of their youth. And were the youngsters who went on to dominate in years to come.
For the past Throwback Thursdays I normally have top picks which I like on the riddim and rate them in a specific order. Unfortunately or fortunately depending on how you look at it, I have failed to do so for this riddim. The tracks nearly all have their own merit which cannot be separated. This is mainly due to the quality of the rhythm itself. Greensleeves Records really outdid themselves here and allowed the artists to really thrive on this +40 track riddim.
As I mentioned earlier this riddim is a no brainer for dancehall lovers. The riddim has everything going for it and you would be foolish not to give it a real listen. The tracks will definitely get your blood flowing. And I can honestly rate it as one of the classic riddims of all time.
