Swell Headed Riddim – Various Labels

Swell Headed is one of those riddims that shows how a single Studio One pattern can keep finding new life across decades. The spine of it comes from Coxsone Dodd at Studio One, with Burning Spear’s original “Swell Headed” sitting at the root of the whole thing. That cut is the anchor, and the later versions keep returning to its same sturdy one-drop pulse, with a dry, driving bassline and plenty of room for the vocal to ride.
