Street Riddim – VP Records 1999
Street Overview
In 1999, VP Records released a reggae project that used the popular one drop base. This rhythm style was a big part of reggae music in the late 1990s. It was often played at reggae events and gave songs a strong, steady beat that people could dance to. The release featured two artists: Shinehead and Sleepy Wonder. Shinehead is a well-known figure in reggae and dancehall. He became famous in the 1980s and 1990s for mixing reggae with hip hop. One of his most famous songs is “Jamaican in New York,” which was a hit cover of Sting’s “Englishman in New York.” On this project, Shinehead performed “My Boo.” The song appeared in two versions: a clean radio version and a street version with stronger lyrics. Sleepy Wonder is another respected reggae artist. He has worked with many producers and is known for his energetic style. On this release, Sleepy Wonder brought his unique voice to the song “Street Life.” His performance added a different flavor to the one drop rhythm. Both “My Boo” by Shinehead and “Street Life” by Sleepy Wonder helped showcase the one drop base that was popular at reggae events in 1999. Their songs are part of the era’s lively reggae scene, highlighting the creativity of artists using classic rhythms.
