Story Line Riddim – Various Artists

Story Line Riddim comes off lean and voice-led, with a raw reggae pulse that leaves plenty of room for the singers to carry the tension. Only two cuts turn up here, and that small frame is part of the appeal: Bookie’s “Black and Black War” leans into darker social commentary, while Maxwell’s “Dont Play Games” keeps the focus on relationship friction and sharp phrasing. Released around 2010, it sits in that period when a lot of reggae riddims were trimming the fat and letting songs speak for themselves instead of crowding the arrangement. That stripped-down approach gives the title a bit of irony too, because there’s no overstatement here, just two compact songs riding the same straight-ahead groove.
