Protection Riddim – Roots Survival Production

By 2010, reggae riddims were often leaning hard on militant themes and bare-bones arrangements, and Protection Riddim sits right in that space with a tense, rootsy swing that leaves plenty of room for the voices. Roots Survival Production line up a compact eight-cut set, with Konshens’ “War Straight, ” Lutan Fyah’s “It Does A Matter, ” and Gyptian’s pairing with Polyfamous doing most of the heavy lifting in the middle of the sequence. Deadly Hunta and Grizzlee open things up with more raw-edged delivery, while the rhythm itself keeps a steady pressure rather than chasing anything flashy. Yt’s “Inna Jamaica” closes the project on a note that pulls the whole thing back to the island, which feels fitting for a riddim this direct.
