1969’s Sophisticated Cissy Riddim comes out of the Josie, Upsetter, and Panther connection, with Allen Toussaint, Marshall Sehorn, and Lee Scratch Perry all tied to the production. The four-track set pulls in I-Roy’s Doctor Who alongside The Meters’ original Sophisticated Cissy and The Upsetters’ Medical Operation and Take One, which gives the release a nice mix of New Orleans funk and early dub-era reggae energy. It’s a short, focused archive piece, and the presence of Perry alongside Toussaint and Sehorn makes it a neat cross-current snapshot from the late 1960s.
