Smash Riddim landed in 2006 through Hyperactive Entertainment, the banner run by Supa Hype, with Craig “Serani” Marsh also tied into the production. It sits right in that mid-2000s dancehall moment when the big juggling riddim could still cut through the dance and spawn a breakout anthem. The instrumental is tense and percussive, with a clipped, forward-driving bounce that leaves plenty of room for patois phrasing, quick-fire hooks, and the kind of aggressive, crowd-moving delivery that works best in a session.

The cut that defines the riddim is Tony Matterhorn’s “Dutty Wine, ” the song that turned a dance craze into a full-blown crossover moment and became the tune most closely identified with Smash.
