Skank Riddim (2011) – Shadyville Music

Skank Riddim lands in 2011 as a Shadyville Music production with a distinctly bilingual, cross-Caribbean feel. The set moves through rootsy reggae voicings, dancehall chat, and a few French-language cuts, all riding a clean, deejay-friendly groove that is light on clutter but strong on forward motion. The rhythm has enough bounce for singers and enough pocket for talkers, then flips into a dub version that gives the instrumentals more room to breathe.

Shadyville Music’s name is attached to a number of reggae projects around this period, and here the label goes for variety rather than one dominant anthem. Anthony Cruz and Shuga’s “I Want Your Money” gives the riddim a sharper commercial edge, while Delly Ranx’s “Needle Eye” brings the kind of clipped, seasoned delivery that has long made him a reliable voice on juggling projects. Daddy Clean’s “I Need A Good Time” pushes the brighter side of the rhythm, and Caporal Poopa, Jubbs and Flash Fu keep “Long Way To Go” moving with a crew-style chant that fits the cut-and-paste energy of the whole set.

The more interesting part of the compilation is how wide it stretches. Afreecan Xpress, Farfad, Faya Green and Mamzell’ Lety, Fayaman, Fyah P, and G Moses and Lexy all add different textures, with the French cuts giving the riddim a wider regional pull.
