Scratch Dem Riddim comes out of Tenament Yard Records at a time when the label was better known for tougher, more straight-ahead dancehall sets, and this one keeps that profile intact. The 2009 five-track run is lean rather than crowded, with Da Plan’s “God Knows, ” Utan Green’s “I Will Sing, ” and Rebel’s “Hollywood” doing most of the heavy lifting. The production sits in that late-2000s lane of sharp drum programming, clipped synth accents, and a hard, skanking pulse rather than anything overly ornamental, so the singers and deejays have to ride the pocket clean. Formila 1 and Essentrial add some contrast, but the riddim’s pull is really in its stripped, no-frills approach: a mid-tempo bounce, a thick bass line, and vocals cut to sit right on top of the beat.
