Satta Riddim (2004) – Clinch Records

Already deep in roots-reggae territory, this 2004 Clinch Records cut pulls four strong voices onto a version of the classic Satta pattern: Anthony B’s “Good and Bad, ” Capleton’s “Dislocate, ” Jah Mali’s “Corner Stone, ” and Luciano’s “Man Of Jah Order. ” Clinch is working from one of reggae’s most durable foundations here, the Abyssinians’ “Satta Massagana” lineage, and the result keeps that old militant lift without polishing away the rough edges. The arrangement feels spare and purposeful, with the drums sitting tight under a patient bass line and the guitar skank left to do most of the talking. Capleton and Luciano bring the most fire and gravity respectively, while Anthony B and Jah Mali keep the message centered. It’s a lean four-cut set, and the steady mid-tempo pulse is what holds it together.
