Recorded out of Austria’s early-2000s reggae corridor, Sam Gilly’s House Of Riddim carries that European-rooted, multilingual edge that was starting to push beyond the usual Jamaican frame. The 2003 session runs 14 cuts deep, with artists switching between English, German and Spanish, so the energy never settles into one neat pocket; instead it moves from conscious talk and direct dancehall lines to a more roots-leaning, community-minded mood. Cappuccino’s “No Fyah, ” Conscious Fiyah’s “What Is It Worth, ” and Jah Meek’s “Say Jah” keep the message front and centre, while Paco Mendoza’s “Attaque” and Sun One’s “Babylon Files” add a harder, more militant turn. The clearest finishing touch comes from Uwe Banton on “Dont Cry, ” a tune that leaves the riddim with a sharper emotional aftertaste than the title might suggest.
