ROCKFORT ROCK RIDDIM produced by SLAM RECORDS 1996
Rockfort Rock Overview
In the mid-1990s, reggae music was going through changes, but the roots instrumental sound stayed strong. The Rockfort Rock Riddim, released in 1996, is a good example of this. At that time, producers and labels were mixing classic reggae styles with new energy. SLAM RECORDS, the label behind this release, was active in bringing out both new and established reggae artists. Known for supporting the reggae scene, SLAM RECORDS helped keep the roots sound alive during a time of musical shifts. Al Campbell’s track, Al Campbell — Neva Fail, brings a soulful voice to the riddim. Campbell is respected in reggae for songs like “Gee Baby” and has worked with many top producers since the 1970s. His smooth delivery fits well with the instrumental’s warm feel. Spanner Banner appears twice on this release. First, with Spanner Banner — What's Going On, he adds his melodic style. Spanner Banner is known for his hit song “Life Goes On,” which reached the UK reggae charts in the 1990s. He also teams up with Trouble on Spanner Banner Feat Trouble — Whats Going On, giving the riddim a fresh twist. The song Trouble - Whats Going On — Whats Going On brings a different voice to the set, rounding out the session. This dub release helped keep reggae’s message and sound alive in 1996’s reggae sessions.
